About Us

The Godlington Foundation aims to reach out to the most vulnerable children of Sierra Leone - those separated from their families, threatened with abuse, and in need of support and commitment.

The NCN Orphanage is located in Grafton, just north of the capital city of Freetown. We have 65 children varying from Blessing, who is 1 year of age, to Lebbie who is 18 years old.

Our 65 children are just a handful of the children in Sierra Leone who are in need of aid. A large majority of Sierra Leonean children are not in safe houses like the NCN Orphanage. They are on the streets, and as a result fall victim to various forms of abuse, including the sex trade, in order to earn a living. Many children lack the basic needs that are often taken for granted such as food, clothing, shelter, education, and a sanitary environment. Government funding for child welfare programmes in Sierra Leone does not exist, making the need for intervention critical.

NCN Orphanage provides medical care, education, and rehabilitation. At present we have just one orphanage, but with your help we have plans to reach out to many more communities in Sierra Leone.

Facts:

· Sierra Leone has the world's worst infant mortality rate at 166 deaths per 1000 live births. Approximately 1 in 4 children die before they reach the age of 5. More than half of these children die of preventable causes such as diarrhoea, malnutrition or dehydraytion (1)

· Considered to be the world's least-developed nation, more than half of Sierra Leone's population of 5.3 million lives in extreme poverty (2) They have very little or no access to medical care. There has recently been a government bill to give medical care to all children under the age of 7. However, this is difficult to access for the poorest and most in need children. The parents/carers are often desperate and faced with the decision of either giving children the medicine they need or selling the medicine in order to buy food and/or pay rent

· Sierra Leone is currently ranked as the second poorest country in the world, comparing 177 countries in an index comparing poverty, life expectancy, and education as well as other factors (3)
